Gatka is an ancient Sikh martial art that emphasizes both physical prowess and spiritual discipline. The word "Gatka" refers to the wooden stick used for training, but the art encompasses a wide array of historical Sikh weaponry, including the Kirpan, Talwar (sword), Chakkar, and Lathi.
Formally codified during the time of the Sixth Guru, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, Gatka was integrated into Sikh culture to ensure that the community could defend the weak and uphold justice.
Today, Gatka is demonstrated globally during Nagar Kirtans, Hola Mohalla at Anandpur Sahib, and international athletic competitions, keeping the warrior spirit (Chardi Kala) vibrant.
