Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple)
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿਮੰਦਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ (ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ)
Founder: Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji & Hazrat Mian Mir Ji
History & Spiritual Significance
Sri Harmandir Sahib, popularly known worldwide as the Golden Temple, was designed by the Fifth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji. He invited the Sufi saint Hazrat Mian Mir Ji to lay its foundation stone in December 1589 CE.
Unlike traditional temple structures built on elevated land, Sri Harmandir Sahib was intentionally constructed at a lower level with doors open on all four sides—symbolizing that anyone, regardless of caste, creed, or background, is welcome.
In 1604 CE, Guru Arjan Dev Ji completed the compilation of the Adi Granth and installed it inside Harmandir Sahib, appointing Baba Buddha Ji as the first Head Granthi.
